Why Family Portraits Are Worth Every Awkward Pose (And How We Make Them Feel Easy)

I want to start with something honest: most families don't love the idea of getting their photos taken.

I hear it all the time. "We're not photogenic." "The kids won't cooperate." "Last time it felt so stiff and forced." And I get it. I really do. Because before Ally and I started doing this together, I had been on the other side of a camera and felt every bit of that awkwardness.

But here's what I've learned after photographing dozens of families across Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, and Carolina Beach: the awkwardness is almost never about the family. It's about the setup. When people feel directed, watched, and posed, they freeze. When they feel relaxed, a little silly, and genuinely engaged with each other, something magical happens.

That's exactly what Ally and I set out to create at AB Coastal Photo.

How Our Sessions Actually Work

One of the questions we get most is, "What does the session actually look like?" People want to know what they're walking into, and that's fair.

Here's the honest answer: it usually looks like a lot of laughing. One of us is behind the camera, and the other is right there with the family, talking, guiding, cracking jokes, and making the kids feel like the camera isn't even there. Having two of us means the energy stays high, nobody feels like they're just standing there waiting, and we're capturing genuine reaction shots the whole time.

For a standard family session, we deliver 20 to 30 edited photos through a digital gallery on Pixieset. We use our Nikon z6iii with an 85mm lens for those beautiful portraits that separate the subject from the background, and a 24-70mm when we want to include the landscape around you. We always have a backup camera on hand too, because the last thing we want is a gear issue ruining the shoot.

Where We Shoot Around Wilmington

The Wilmington area is genuinely one of the best places in the country to do family portraits. The light here is incredible, especially in spring and fall.

Wrightsville Beach is a perennial favorite. That open sky, soft sand, and golden afternoon light does most of the heavy lifting for us. If you're going for a coastal, airy feel, it's hard to beat. Carolina Beach has a slightly more relaxed, neighborhood feel that works especially well for younger families. Airlie Gardens is stunning for families who want something more lush and colorful, though you'll want to book in advance because spaces fill up fast in the spring.

If you're closer to the city, downtown Wilmington along the Cape Fear River gives portraits a completely different feel, something more editorial and lifestyle-driven, which a lot of professional and younger families love. We also love the New Hanover County Arboretum for variety and color.

What's the Cost of a Family Photo Session in Wilmington?

We get this question all the time, and we'd rather be upfront about it than make you dig.

Family sessions at AB Coastal Photo are priced based on session size and scope, up to $1,000 for larger family sessions. We ask for a $50 deposit when you book, and the balance is due on the day of the shoot. Most families book about one to two weeks in advance. After the session, you'll have your gallery within two to three weeks.

Our calendar fills quickly during fall, which is the most popular season for family portraits around here.
