Professional Headshots in Wilmington, NC: What Makes the Difference Between a Photo and a Portrait

I want to tell you about a guy right here in Wilmington NC who came to us for professional headshots for his LinkedIn profile.

He was a commercial real estate broker, mid-career, and he had been using the same photo for about six years. He told me that himself, a little sheepishly. "I keep meaning to update it," he said. "I just figured it wasn't that important."

He booked us, we did his session, and about three weeks after he got his gallery, he messaged us to say he had landed two new client calls in the week after updating his profile photo. New people, reaching out because something about how he presented himself made them feel like they could trust him.

That is what a good headshot actually does.

What Most People Get Wrong About Headshots

The number one mistake people make is thinking a headshot is just documentation. Something you have to have, like a driver's license photo, but for your career. They approach it like it is going to be uncomfortable and kind of useless and just another thing to check off a list.

A professional headshot, done well, is actually the first impression you make on every potential client, employer, or collaborator who finds you online before they ever speak to you. It communicates competence, warmth, and approachability in a fraction of a second. It either builds trust or it does not.

The difference between a photo that builds trust and one that does not has almost nothing to do with your looks. It has everything to do with how the image was captured, lit, and edited.

How We Approach Headshot Sessions

Headshots are one of our most popular services at AB Coastal Photo, and we have had a lot of time to develop an approach that works. A few things we do differently:

Ally and I both show up. For headshots, this matters because one of us can focus entirely on directing you. We coach your posture, the angle of your chin, where your eyes are going, how to relax your shoulders. Most people tense up without realizing it. We help you let that go, and it shows in the final images.

We work primarily in natural light. Wilmington has excellent natural light, and we know how to use it. Our bright, airy editing style ensures skin tones stay true and the retouching looks like you, just polished. Not airbrushed. Not overworked. You.

We keep multiple poses. Your headshot session is not one angle and done. We work through a range of looks, different expressions, different framings, so you walk away with options. Some people need something approachable and warm for a personal brand. Some need something sharp and direct for a corporate context. We cover the range.

What Is Included in a Headshot Session

Headshot sessions with AB Coastal Photo start at $250. Here is what that includes:

  • Both Ally and Brian on location, one shooting and one directing

  • Multiple poses and setups to give you options

  • Professional retouching through Lightroom, bright and airy, true to color

  • Gallery delivered through Pixieset as high-resolution JPEGs, ready for LinkedIn, company websites, email signatures, press pages, and anywhere else you need them

  • Turnaround of 2 to 4 business days typically

We can shoot on location anywhere in Wilmington and the surrounding area, including downtown, Mayfaire, Wrightsville Beach, or at your office if the space works. We will advise you on what to wear, what colors photograph best, and what the light situation will be at our chosen location and time of day.

To reserve your date, we collect a $50 deposit. The remaining balance is due on the day of the shoot. We book 1 to 2 weeks out, so plan accordingly if you have a deadline.

Who We Typically Shoot Headshots For

We work with a wide range of professionals across Wilmington and the surrounding area:

Realtors who need strong listing profile photos and marketing materials. Attorneys, consultants, and financial advisors who want something that conveys trust and authority. Business owners building a personal brand online. Healthcare providers who need updated professional imagery. Executives who are preparing for a career move or a board bio update. Graduates entering the job market for the first time.

If you have a use case that is not on that list, it probably still applies. If you need a photo that represents you professionally, that is what we do.

The Thing About Feeling Comfortable

I hear it from almost everyone before a headshot session: "I hate having my photo taken."

We have developed an approach specifically for people who feel this way, because honestly, most people do. A big part of what makes our sessions work is that we are not strangers with cameras making you perform. We talk to you. We walk you through every pose. We tell you when something is working and exactly why. By the time we are ten minutes into the session, most people are surprised by how natural it feels.

If you have been putting off updating your professional headshots Wilmington NC, this is your sign. The difference a current, well-executed photo makes is real. We have seen it happen again and again.
